How You Act When You Have the Day Off

day off

When you take a day off from work, especially one after months and months of showing up dutifully every single day, is it just me or do you feel like a completely different person? Like there’s a freedom that opens up in your stomach and radiates through all parts of your body. The tension in your back and head go away, and suddenly you’re care-free Karen feel as giddy as a child on Christmas.

home aloneThis is me today. After months of not taking a full day off, just for a mental holiday, I’m left wondering, ‘how do I make this the best day off?’ I want to get shit done but at the same time, I want to relax.

Do you clean the house and get those dumb little chores that you need done, done? Or do you go shopping? Then between all these thoughts are the dumb things you do to waste away just minutes that seem to turn into hours. I mean, before writing this, I began to go down the rabbit hole of YouTube, watching videos of songs I love or haven’t heard in years including:

  • Bicycle by Skylar Grey
  • American Boy by Estelle and Kayne West (this is an ode to my U.K. readers)
  • So What by Pink
  • Stupid Girl by Pink

But to have a rejuvenating or meaningful day off, I think it honestly takes discipline and will power. Maybe I’m over thinking this but hear me out. You don’t need to have A.D.D to sit down to watch 1 episode of Shitt’s Creek at 11 then by 3, you realize you just finished an entire season. Or if you go into a store to treat yourself with 1 purchase but see 4 dresses you like, say “fuck it” and spend half a paycheck. Or for example I tell myself, I’m going to clean up or fold laundry for just 20 minutes. At minute 21 I’m like “the only thing left are the socks. I can put those together. Oh crap, forgot about the laundry still in the dryer. Well I can just knock that out real quick.”

A List for My Day Off

So guys, I think after writing this, I’ve decided to put myself on a schedule today. It will be filled with things that make me happy but a few chores too. After all, I’m going to be sitting at soccer fields from 8 a.m to 6 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday, I need to live today up!

What do you think about this? Do you actually struggle on a day off? Are you great at finding the balance or are you a complete couch potato?
